IVADO and ISTEAH join forces to propel the next generation

IVADO and ISTEAH join forces to propel the next generation of digital intelligence

Montreal, September 29, 2021 – The Institute for Data Valorization (IVADO) is proud to announce its first partnership with a Haitian academic institution, the Institute of Sciences, of Technologies and Advanced Studies of Haiti (ISTEAH)!

ISTEAH is an academic excellence driven institution, dedicated primarily to the training of high-caliber scientists and innovators throughout Haiti: post-doctoral, doctoral (Ph.D.), master’s (M.Sc., M.Sc.A.), as well as advanced continuing education in science and technology.

Through this partnership, IVADO offers scholarships to four ISTEAH students at the master’s or doctoral level, allowing them to carry out supervised research internships at the Université de Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal and HEC Montréal.

These internships will begin in the winter of 2022 and last five months.

Diversity is a fact, but inclusion is a choice. By offering research internships in Quebec to the ISTEAH student community, we are choosing not only to foster knowledge enrichment beyond our borders, but also to create opportunities for Haitian individuals to concretely contribute to the development of digital intelligence.

Yoshua Bengio

Scientific Director at IVADO and Full Professor at the Université de Montréal

This partnership between IVADO and ISTEAH comes at the right time, at a time when an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scale has just hit the South of Haiti, in a country that is facing a glaring deficit of study and research programs in digital intelligence. It will allow Haiti to develop a data science skills cluster to avoid increasing social inequalities in a country where they are already blatant.

Samuel Pierre

President and CEO of ISTEAH

Eligibility for the program

Any citizen or resident of Haiti enrolled in a program related to digital intelligence at ISTEAH and co-supervised by a faculty member of the Université de Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal or HEC Montréal may submit an application.

Submission of applications

The application period will be open until October 30, 2021 at 5:00 pm. Applications must be sent no later than October 30, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. to Mr. Samuel Pierre, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ISTEAH and Full Professor at the Department of Computer and Software Engineering, by email samuel.pierre@polymtl.ca and include the following elements:

  • A curriculum vitae;
  • A letter of motivation;
  • A description of the research project;
  • A copy of the most recent diplomas;
  • Transcripts (of all academic records);
  • A letter of support from the master’s or doctoral supervisor in Quebec.

The Canada First Research Excellence Fund made this project possible.

Supporting Haiti’s next generation in Digital Intelligence

According to the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the development of data sciences could contribute to increasing international inequalities. Through this agreement, IVADO and ISTEAH hope to stimulate the sharing and transfer of knowledge and thus strengthen academic ties between the two countries. This is part of IVADO’s strategy to promote equity, diversity and inclusion within its ecosystem.

ABOUT IVADO

The Institute of Data Valorization (IVADO) is a Quebec-wide institute at the interface of academia and organizations. IVADO transforms advances in digital intelligence into concrete applications and benefits for society.

IVADO’s actions are guided by four values: excellence, collaboration, accessibility and impact. In order to convey these values, IVADO mobilizes a university expertise unique in the world to catalyze responsible socio-economic development and the international influence of Quebec as a world center for digital intelligence, by focusing on its main pillars:

Talents: the training of current and future talents for digital innovation;

Knowledge: the development of cutting-edge knowledge in digital intelligence;

Transfer: co-development of innovations and facilitation of their appropriation;

Community: the deployment of a community of interest in digital intelligence.

The IVADO community is made up of academic members, academic partners, network partners, international partners and industrial members. These members represent more than 1400 scientists (professors, researchers and students) and more than 100 companies.

ABOUT ISTEAH

The Institute of Sciences, of Technologies and Advanced Studies of Haiti (ISTEAH) is an initiative of the Groupe de Réflexion et d’Action pour une Haïti Nouvelle (GRAHN)-Monde which aims to accelerate the training of university instructors, particularly in the scientific and technological disciplines.

The aim is to put science and technology at the service of development, by training citizens, innovators and leaders capable of acting competently at the local, national and regional levels, by pursuing an ideal of excellence in actions and interventions. ISTEAH seeks to support institutions of higher education, increasing their capacity to meet the growing demand for training in the country and the necessary qualification of human resources that the country needs to recover, according to a proactive approach aimed at the eventual autonomy of these institutions. ISTEAH is developing, with partners from the Haitian university community, a Haitian model of advanced studies training, using the best North American and European practices in science and technology.

Studying in Canada

Students applying to study in Canada are encouraged to do their own due diligence to determine what travel restrictions are in place for entry into Canada (including COVID-19), as well as the various quarantine and immunization measures in place:

In addition to the requirements for entry into Canada, selected students will have to comply with the usual immigration rules by bringing the required documents to enter the country. Depending on the internship chosen to complete the internship, IVADO and ISTEAH will direct the selected students to the appropriate services to inform them of the steps to follow.
