IVADO and Bombardier Sign a Strategic Agreement to Develop Innovative Digital Solutions

  • Research projects aim to improve productivity in the aerospace industry and to design more efficient aircraft through data valorization, optimization and artificial intelligence
  • Agreement to contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of both Bombardier and Québec’s aerospace industry

Montréal, February 2018Bombardier and Montréal’s Institute for data valorization (IVADO) confirmed today that they have concluded a strategic agreement to develop innovative digital solutions tailored to the aerospace industry. With this agreement, Bombardier becomes a member of IVADO.

Over the next five years, research projects stemming from this major collaboration will touch on data science, optimization and artificial intelligence to improve productivity within the industry and to design more efficient aircraft. In addition, the partnership between IVADO and Bombardier will support university training for future data scientists and the development of the next generation of highly qualified and diversified talent. Québec’s entire aerospace industry will benefit from the results of these projects.

Each aircraft program generates significant volumes of data throughout its life cycle, from its design and production phases to its operation and maintenance. The opportunities to enhance this data are considerable, particularly to supply faster optimization tools, to accelerate the introduction of new technologies that reduce aviation’s environmental footprint or to automate the processing of in-flight data.

“Data science is an important driver for change in mobility and Bombardier is very pleased to be joining IVADO, a world-class ecosystem of internationally renowned researchers”, said Fassi Kafyeke, Senior Director, Innovation at Bombardier. “By bringing together IVADO’s academic expertise and Bombardier’s technological know-how, we are creating complementary dynamics for data valorization in aerospace which will benefit passengers, customers, suppliers and workers in our industry.

“The aerospace sector is a key economic driver in Québec and constitutes an ideal ecosystem for data valorization. The pursuit of its digital transformation is critical to tackle today’s complex technological challenges and meet the increasing expectations of customers,” stated Gilles Savard, Chief Executive Officer, IVADO. “We welcome this agreement with Bombardier, a global leader in the aerospace industry. This collaboration contributes significantly to the advancement of data science in Québec.”

About IVADO

The Institute for Data Valorization (IVADO) is a joint initiative of HEC Montréal, Polytechnique Montréal and Université de Montréal that brings together nearly 100 industrial, academic and government partners. With over 1 000 researchers, IVADO is a multidisciplinary centre of advanced expertise in statistics, artificial intelligence and operations research.

IVADO’s mission is to 1) contribute to the development of an economic sector in big data processing for decision making; 2) create privileged partnerships between industry and the administrative, social and academic sectors; 3) contribute to the advancement of knowledge and train new generations of data scientists; and 4) foster exchange and knowledge sharing between experts, partners, researchers and students.

IVADO provides a framework for six research centres: Canada Excellence Research Chair in Data Science for Real-Time Decision Making, CIRRELT, CRM, GERAD, MILA and Tech3Lab.
